Srinagar, April 4 (KNS): A serious issue has come to light in Barthana Qammerwari, where around 180 kanals of Wakf land have reportedly been taken over illegally by land mafias. People in the area are now urging the government to take strong action and reclaim the land.
The Wakf land, meant for religious and charitable purposes, is being rented out at very low rates—only Rs. 75 per year for two kanals and Rs. 500 per year for eight kanals. These figures are far below the actual market value, raising questions about possible mismanagement and illegal deals.
Residents say that much of the land has been encroached upon, with illegal buildings coming up and influential people taking control. “This is a clear misuse of Wakf land. It should benefit the public, not private individuals,” said a local resident who did not want to be named.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
People have also blamed the Wakf authorities for not keeping proper watch on the land. They believe that if the land was managed properly, it could generate good income for public welfare projects. Instead, it is being used for private gain, they allege.
A community leader said, “The government must act quickly. This land belongs to the people, and justice must be done.”
So far, officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Wakf Board have not made any public statement. However, with rising public anger, the government may soon be forced to take action. Locals are hoping the land will be returned to its rightful use, and those responsible for the illegal occupation will be punished. (KNS)
