Srinagar, Jan 8 (KNS): Police in Srinagar have seized 8 kilograms of heroin and arrested two key drug peddlers, dealing a major blow to the narcotics trade in the region.
Addressing a press conference in Srinagar, SSP Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, stated that a police team from Police Post Qamarwari, during a routine checkpoint at Barthana Crossing, intercepted a Tata Sumo (registration number JK05D-1837) with two individuals on board. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 6 kilograms of heroin hidden beneath the driver’s seat. Additionally, during a personal search, 2 more kilograms of heroin were recovered from the suspects, who had concealed 1 kilogram each in polythene bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Anas Ajaz Awan, son of Ajaz Ahmad Awan, a resident of Dildar Tangdar, Kupwara, and Zahid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Channipora, Tangdar, Kupwara.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThe seized narcotics and the vehicle used in the crime have been taken as evidence.
A case has been registered under FIR No. 03/2025 in Police Station Parimpora under sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act, and further investigations are underway. SSP Srinagar revealed that the preliminary probe indicates that the heroin was smuggled from Pakistan as part of a cross-border drug trafficking network. Police are actively investigating both backward and forward linkages to dismantle the entire syndicate, Hussain said.
Reaffirming the police's commitment to eradicating drug trafficking, SSP Srinagar emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics. He urged the public to support law enforcement by reporting any drug-related activities to the nearest police station or by dialing 112.
