Mehbooba Mufti Expresses Profound Grief on the Demise of Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir

Srinagar April 18 (KNS): The President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences on the passing of eminent Islamic scholar and spiritual leader Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir, who breathed his last in the early hours of Friday, April 18, 2025, at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar. He was 85.

In a condolence message issued today, Ms. Mufti paid rich tributes to Allama Baqir, describing him as “not just a scholar but a beacon of knowledge, piety, and moral guidance.” She said his demise marks the end of an era of profound religious scholarship, spiritual leadership, and community service in Jammu and Kashmir.

Born on March 21, 1940, in Budgam, Kashmir, Allama Baqir began his early education at Babul Ilm in his hometown. He later pursued advanced Islamic studies at the renowned Howza Ilmia seminary in Najaf Ashraf, Iraq. In 1982, he returned to Kashmir to carry forward the sacred spiritual and scholarly mission of his revered family, a lineage that traces back to Aga Syed Yusuf Al-Moosavi Al-Safavi a name synonymous with religious leadership in the region.

Allama Baqir’s scholarly contributions and spiritual outreach extended across languages and generations. Among his many accolades, he was a proud recipient of the prestigious Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to Islamic scholarship and intellectual discourse.

Extending her heartfelt condolences to Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al-Safavi, his nephew and a prominent religious figure, Ms. Mehbooba Mufti also expressed solidarity with the bereaved Aga family and members of Anjuman-E-Sharie Shian, a key religious organization to which Allama Baqir was closely associated.

“May Allah Tallah grant the departed soul the highest place in Jannat and give strength to the bereaved family during this difficult time,” Ms. Mufti prayed, emphasizing that his legacy would continue to inspire generations to come.
