NC’s Commitment to Liquor Ban questionable: Ahmad Ayaz

Srinagar, Feb 15 (KNS): Social activist Ahmad Ayaz has reiterated the demand for a liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir, questioning the sincerity of the National Conference (NC) in addressing the issue.

In a statement issued to KNS, he stated that while the demand for prohibition has been raised multiple times, NC has not taken concrete steps to implement it.

According to Ayaz, the liquor ban is essential not only due to religious considerations but also because of the rising substance abuse problem in the region. “Alcohol addiction is becoming a major concern in J&K, particularly among the youth. With limited employment opportunities, many are turning to substance abuse, and unrestricted availability of liquor worsens the situation,” he said.

Ayaz noted that an NC legislator recently introduced a bill seeking a liquor ban, but he questioned whether the party is genuinely committed to pursuing it.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe referred to past instances, including Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s tenure, where similar demands were raised but not acted upon. “NC has had several opportunities to impose a ban on liquor, yet no concrete action has been taken,” he stated.

He also pointed out that leaders from various parties, including BJP’s Dr. Nirmal Singh, have extended support to the bill. However, he expressed doubts over whether it would be followed through with the required political will. “Many such bills have been introduced in the past but were either diluted or not pursued seriously,” Ayaz remarked.

He emphasized that a liquor ban should not remain a political talking point but must be addressed with a clear and time-bound strategy. “The well-being of the people, particularly the youth, should be the priority,” he added. (KNS)
