Organophosphorus Poisoning Suspected in Rajouri Deaths, Official Confirmation Awaited

Srinagar, Jan 27 (KNS): A suspected case of organophosphorus poisoning is being investigated as the potential cause of 17 mysterious deaths in the Badhaal village of Rajouri district, according to health officials.

The fatalities, spanning two months, have claimed the lives of 17 individuals, including 14 children, raising alarm across the region.

A senior doctor, atropine injections—commonly used as an antidote against organophosphorus poisoning—have shown promising results in treating patients admitted to the hospital. "We administered atropine to stabilize heart rates in two patients as a precautionary measure, and they responded well. This suggests that organophosphorus or a related compound could be involved," the doctor stated.

While the use of atropine has provided relief, the doctor emphasized that the diagnosis is not yet conclusive. "We are awaiting official reports from advanced laboratories. It is premature to definitively attribute these deaths to organophosphorus poisoning," the doctor cautioned.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Organophosphorus compounds, often found in certain insecticides and nerve agents, can be toxic if ingested or absorbed. The medical team reportedly used a trial-and-error approach to manage symptoms, which has yielded positive outcomes for some patients.

The mysterious illness has also sparked concerns over potential environmental or accidental exposure to toxic substances in the area. Health officials have intensified efforts to trace the source and prevent further casualties.

The village has been reeling under distress as investigations continue. Authorities have called for heightened public awareness and precautionary measures to mitigate risks while urging patience as scientific inquiries proceed.

The deaths and the suspected poisoning case have drawn attention to the need for stringent monitoring of hazardous substances and improved healthcare facilities in rural areas. (KNS)
