Srinagar, Apr 11 (KNS): Police on Friday thwarted a protest march by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, by barricading the party headquarters near Sher-e-Kashmir Park and restricting the protestors within the premises.
Led by party general secretary Khurshid Alam, a large number of PDP workers had assembled to voice their opposition to the Act, which was passed in Parliament last week. As the protestors attempted to march towards the city centre, police deployed outside the office stopped them and closed the gates, confining the demonstration to the premises.
Carrying placards reading “We reject the Waqf Bill” and “NC’s silence is criminal,” the protestors raised slogans demanding the repeal of the Act.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelAfter a brief protest, the demonstrators dispersed peacefully.
Speaking to reporters, Khurshid Alam said the protest was meant to be peaceful but was curtailed by police. “We wanted to express our dissent against the Waqf Bill. No section of the society accepts this bill, especially given how it was passed in Parliament during the night,” he said.
Alam also took aim at the National Conference (NC), accusing it of remaining silent on the issue. “While the BJP’s approach towards Muslims is condemnable, the criminal silence of the NC is equally regretful. The NC is simply befooling the people,” he added. (KNS)
