Srinagar, Nov 28(KNS): Private transporters in Srinagar staged a protest on Thursday against the operation of Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) and Smart buses within city routes.
The All Jammu and Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association accused the authorities of unfair practices, claiming that private buses are being restricted under the pretext of reducing traffic while RTC and Smart buses are allowed to operate freely.
Protestors expressed concerns over losing their livelihoods due to these restrictions. “This is injustice. If RTC buses can enter the city, why are private buses being stopped?” said one protester. Others echoed similar sentiments, demanding that either all buses be allowed to operate in the city or that private transporters be treated fairly.
"We are not against the RTC buses, but it's unfair to let them operate freely while we are being pushed out. We’re simply asking for equal opportunities," said another protester.
"This decision is hurting our families.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelIf the authorities are serious about reducing traffic, they should apply the same rules to everyone, not just target private bus operators," he said.
The protestors also called for RTC buses to stop operating beyond Parimpora and Pantha Chowk, areas that are vital for private operators. Several protesters were detained by the police, and the authorities have yet to respond to their demands.
In response to ongoing restrictions on JKRTC buses entering the city, the Minister for Transport, Satish Sharma, instructed the Secretary of Transport to address the matter with the concerned authorities on an urgent basis. The Minister emphasized that lifting the restrictions would ease commuter hardships and ensure better accessibility. He further highlighted that JKRTC’s transport services are affordable and well-liked by the public, particularly employees, students, and patients. The government has committed to resolving the issue promptly to prevent further inconvenience.(KNS).
