Jammu, Jan 14 (KNS):Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reached Akhnoor on Sunday to commemorate Armed Forces Veterans' Day, marking the occasion with a series of tributes to ex-servicemen and the families of fallen soldiers. The event, organized under the aegis of the Northern Command, was attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, senior military officers, and nearly 1,000 veterans from various regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
The day, observed annually on January 14, recognizes the contributions of former service personnel and marks the retirement anniversary of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief. A key highlight of the event was the hoisting of a 108-foot National Flag, a symbol of gratitude towards the armed forces. Additionally, Singh inaugurated the Akhnoor Heritage Museum, a significant initiative aimed at preserving the military history of the region. The museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and accounts of battles fought in Akhnoor and nearby areas, paying tribute to the region’s strategic importance.
Veterans and Veer Naris (war widows) were felicitated during the ceremony, with the Defence Minister personally interacting with many of them. "Our veterans are the pillars of our national security, and their sacrifices will always be remembered," Singh said. (KNS)
