Srinagar, Jan 10 (KNS) Security has been heightened across Kashmir ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on January 13 to inaugurate the 6.5-kilometre Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district.
The Special Protection Group (SPG) has taken charge of the security, while Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with paramilitary forces, have set up additional checkpoints and intensified surveillance.
A senior security official told that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are in place, including CCTV monitoring, frisking points, and area domination exercises. The Z-Morh tunnel, built at a cost of ?2,680 crore, will provide year-round connectivity to Sonamarg, benefiting both civilians and the military. The event will be attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and other dignitaries.
Meanwhile, the Kargil-Srinagar highway will remain closed from January 11 to 14 due to icy conditions and maintenance work, which officials suggest is also a security measure for the PM’s visit. Traffic is expected to resume on January 14, subject to weather conditions. (KNS)
