UNHCR Team Meets Rohingya Refugees in Jammu Amid Debate on Basic Services

 Srinagar, Dec 11 (KNS) A two-member team from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) visited the Rohingya Muslim community in a slum area in Jammu today.

Senior Protection Officer Tomoko Fukumura and Protection Associate Ragini Trakroo Zutushi met with the refugees and local residents in the Kiryani Talab area of Narwal.

The visit comes amid an ongoing debate over whether the immigrants, who are settled illegally, should be provided with basic services like water and electricity.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Minister, Javed Ahmed Rana, stated on December 7 that the water supply to the slums housing the Rohingyas would not be cut off until a decision is made by the Centre regarding their deportation.

Two days later, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized that the Centre should make a decision on the fate of the Rohingya population in Jammu, noting that they could not be left to suffer from starvation or cold.(KNS)
