Bandipora, Feb 3 (KNS): Residents of Konan and Babagund villages in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district are grappling with severe pollution and deteriorating infrastructure, prompting urgent calls for government intervention.
The most pressing concern is the choking of water canals, crucial for both irrigation and drinking water, due to excessive polythene waste. With no proper garbage disposal mechanism in place, locals are forced to dump waste into streams, causing massive accumulation of plastic waste.
"The canals are choked, and the water level is alarmingly low," said Riyaz Ahmad, a resident of Konan. "We urge the Rural Development Department to introduce a proper garbage collection system and take immediate steps to clean the canals."
Adding to the woes, the much-needed Water Supply Scheme in Konan remains largely ineffective, as its pre-settling and filtration units are yet to be made operational. Despite being functional for years, the scheme has failed to provide clean drinking water to thousands of villagers.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
"It was meant to be a blessing, but due to official inaction, we are deprived of clean water," said Shafat Ahmad, a local resident. "We appeal to the authorities to activate all components of the scheme and ensure safe drinking water for us."
Meanwhile, in the Hajin area of Bandipora, residents fear for their safety due to the crumbling road near the Jhelum River embankment. A section of the embankment collapsed years ago, and while temporary repairs have been made, cracks continue to appear, forcing authorities to divert traffic.
"The authorities conducted soil tests and used machinery, but the problem remains," said a concerned local. "A permanent solution is needed to prevent a possible disaster."
The residents are urging the district administration to take immediate corrective measures. (KNS)
