Srinagar Sept 14 (KNS) : Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Climate Action Group (JKCAG) Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat has welcomed the statement of Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development Department J&K Govt Mandeep Kour wherein she said Govt officials especially municipal officials can’t preach things unless they don’t practice it.

She urged home composting of biodegradable waste within the premises of their houses. Mandeep Kour was speaking to press on the side-lines of a function organised at Amar Singh College Srinagar where Srinagar Municipal Corporation-SMC launched the Swachta Internship Programme. Commissioner Secretary HUDD said that we keep talking about cleanliness (swachta) and sanitation but unless we become serious bout this issue we can’t see a tangible change.

“ How many of us are managing waste at home. I ask my commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation , other officers are you doing home composting of waste ? We can only preach when we practice this “ said Commissioner Secretary HUDD Mandep Kour

Dr Raja Muzaffar also hailed the Bandipora district administration’s decision to make home composting of biodegradable waste mandatory for households with sufficient space around their homes.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelHe said that such decisions are must and all Govt officers must start home composting of waste and then this can be enforced on citizens

“ We have been urging for home composting for last 10 years . In fact, I met the then Chief Secretary, B. V. R. Subramanium, in 2018 on this issue and in the last 10 years I have written multiple articles on the subject. Govt has woke up late but it is never too late. A formal order should be issued to make home composting mandatory on all municipal officers , rural developmemt department officials , teachers and all Govt officials. This can be then followed by citizens as well. If these stringent decisions are not taken our rivers , streams and open spaces will get choked with trash” said Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat (KNS)
