Collective Efforts Needed to Combat Drug Menace: SSP Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 24 (KNS):In a major crackdown against drug abuse, Srinagar Police registered 94 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2024, seizing 1.7 kg of brown sugar, 2.83 kg of crystal meth, several psychotropic drugs, and properties worth Rs 4.5 crore, officials said.  
 
Addressing the media, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, highlighted the progress made in combating drug trafficking in the city. He revealed that 156 individuals were arrested during the year, with 46 major cases filed and 26 notorious drug peddlers detained under the NDPSA. "Our crackdown led to significant recoveries, including drugs and properties linked to narcotics crimes," he said.  
 
The SSP noted that seven vehicles and seven residential properties, collectively valued at Rs 4.5 crore, were seized as part of the operation. Additionally, police submitted 26 dossiers to the Divisional Commissioner, resulting in detention orders against key offenders. He praised the Divisional Commissioner's office for its proactive role in facilitating these actions.

Raising awareness and fostering sensitivity are crucial to eradicating this menace," he stated.  
 
Drawing parallels to the region's long battle against terrorism, the SSP called for similar determination to address the drug problem. He urged parents to seek help from rehabilitation centers for affected individuals and assured them of police support. "We view drug addicts as victims in need of treatment, but traffickers and peddlers will face the full force of the law," he said.  
 
The SSP also appealed to the public to report any drug-related activities through police helplines. "Many offenders think they are beyond the reach of the law, but we are closely monitoring their activities. The fight against drug trafficking will continue with full vigor. Together, we can make Srinagar a drug-free city," he concluded. (KNS)
