Jammu Kashmir Celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities

 Srinagar, December 3(KNS): The Government of Jammu and Kashmir marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with a series of events across the Union Territory, particularly in Srinagar, to honor and empower persons with disabilities (PwDs).

The global theme for this year, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” emphasized the importance of enabling PwDs as leaders in building equitable and sustainable societies.

The Department of Social Welfare hosted its official event at Abhenandana Home, Solina, Srinagar, where Dr. Bilal Bhat, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, interacted with children at the facility.
Dr. Bhat underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the needs and aspirations of PwDs, particularly through schemes and programs aimed at their upliftment.

The event provided a comprehensive overview of achievements in key areas such as Unique Disability ID (UDID)-Enabling centralized identification and benefits for PwDs, Social Security-Expanding financial and community support. Health, Education and Improving infrastructure and mobility for PwDs.
M. Iqbal Lone, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, detailed the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016 and the J&K RPWD Rules, 2021, while also addressing the resolution of grievances registered through the Commissioner’s Office.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThe event emphasized inclusive leadership and strategies to advance disability rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
Hundreds of aids and appliances were also distributed by the District and Directorate of Social Welfare Kashmir in this event.

At a parallel event held at the Voluntary Medicare Society (VMS), Bemina, Mr. Lone, as the chief guest, lauded the efforts of civil society organizations in complementing government initiatives. He highlighted the importance of systemic reforms, strategic partnerships, and community-driven efforts to create a robust framework for PwD empowerment.

“The Government of Jammu and Kashmir is committed to fostering an inclusive society through systemic reforms, increased accessibility, and collaboration with civil society organizations,” said Mr. Lone. He commended VMS and other organizations for their invaluable contributions to disability affairs and called for sustained efforts to ensure an inclusive and sustainable future for PwDs.

Through these events, Jammu and Kashmir reaffirmed its dedication to inclusivity, empowerment, and the holistic development of persons with disabilities, striving to uphold their rights and amplify their leadership in society.(KNS).
