Srinagar, Oct 25 (KNS): Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday refused to campaign for the National Conference (NC) candidate in the Budgam Assembly by-election, citing the party’s failure to uphold the mandate given by the people.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir gave a strong majority to a single party. Within a year, that mandate was not respected. This is why people will ask questions,” he said, adding that citizens would look for alternatives if public trust continues to be ignored.
On Rajya Sabha elections, Mehdi said, “I do not know who voted or cross-voted. The Chief Minister may know, but he refuses to reveal names. This is not private property, it is public trust".
He added that any betrayal of the people’s mandate should be made public to remove doubt among legislators and citizens.
Mehdi also spoke about social initiatives, including the inauguration of mosques and promoting sports and moral guidance to fight drugs and alcohol. “Sports is one way to keep youth engaged and away from drugs. It is the responsibility of society and government to provide facilities and opportunities.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelBoth public and private sectors should work together to create talent-oriented infrastructure,” he said as per KNS.
On governance issues, Mehdi criticized inconsistencies in local administration and policy implementation. He cited the unresolved meter issue, saying, “A year ago, we promised to remove unfair meters. Now, residents are told to use them because officials have implemented them in their own households. People need consistency in promises and actions.”
He said the NC must act collectively with like-minded groups for the survival and development of Jammu and Kashmir. “It is not about party politics alone. Our struggle for existence requires collective efforts. If a party ignores the mandate of the people, alternatives will emerge,” he said.
Mehdi urged recognition of local heroes and individuals who contribute to society. “Celebrate those who are honest, work for the community, and inspire confidence. Society needs them, and they should be acknowledged,” he said, concluding that citizens themselves should judge the right course of action, without relying solely on party direction.(KNS).
