NIT Srinagar, GDC Baramulla Celebrate World Science Day at Gulmarg

 Srinagar, Nov 12(KNS): National Institute of Technology Srinagar and Government Degree College Baramulla celebrated World Science Day (WSD-2024) at the picturesque Gulmarg, bringing together a wide range of audiences, including scholars, students, civil society members, dignitaries, and eminent speakers connecting science to society.

The event, conceived and headed by Prof. M.A. Shah, NIT Srinagar, and Prof T A Chalkoo, GDC Baramulla, featured an engaging lineup of speeches, discussions, interactive sessions, and expert lectures.

The chief guest for the occasion was the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Tangmarg and alumni of NIT Srinagar Er. Farooq Ahmad Shah underscored the significance of such gatherings and announced to host and support the celebration of World Science Day - 2025. 

In his opening remarks, Er Shah highlighted the pressing need for organizing programs that foster scientific thinking, innovation, curiosity and public awareness. He commended NIT Srinagar for taking the lead in promoting science in the region and assured him of his full support in making next year’s celebration even more impactful.

He emphasized that engaging with science is crucial for societal development, particularly in addressing local and global issues such as climate change, energy crises, water and technological advancement. 
The presence of dignitaries which includes HOD Physics, GDC Tangmarg Prof Mir Hameeda, Chairperson Salvetron Int School Haya Trumboo, G.N. Var, President of the Private Schools Association, Haq, Principal HSS Haril, Farooq Ahmad Lone and his Team from Local Civil Society, Dr. B A Shah, Gowhar, Gh Mohiuddin from Education Department and Mr Malik from JKTDC added depth to the discussions, fostering a spirit of collective inquiry about the issues society is facing and mutual respect for diverse perspectives.

Tariq Ahmad Chakloo set the tone for the celebration with an inspiring lecture on the origins and development of science. He delved into historical narratives and cultural philosophies, including Shivism, and the teachings of prominent scholars such as Sheik ul Alam (RA),  Abhinav Gupta and Lal Ded, who have significantly influenced the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Kashmir Valley. Prof. Chakloo emphasized that these luminaries laid the foundation for inquiry and rational thought, which form the bedrock of scientific discovery today. 


Prof. M.A. Shah, the event advisor and convener, delivered a captivating speech on the relevance of science in daily life and the challenges ahead. He highlighted various global issues, which includes health, energy, food, climate, clean water, starvation and the security in this digital era.

Prof. Shah specifically acknowledged the contributions of Mr. Aaqib Rashid Shah, a scholar from the Department of Physics, for bringing attention to these critical issues through his research and writings appeared in todays newspaper. He called for collaborative efforts to promote scientific literacy, emphasizing that science offers practical solutions to real-world problems. 


The technical and plenary lecture was delivered by an Alumni of National Institute of Technology Srinagar and Managing Director Green Technologies Er. Bashir Ahmad Dar, who leads the Solar Cell Rooftop Mission in Jammu & Kashmir, spoke about the significance of harnessing solar energy to meet the region's energy needs.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

He outlined the benefits of rooftop solar installations in reducing carbon footprints and providing cost-effective energy solutions. His address resonated with the audience, especially in light of the increasing demand for renewable energy sources. By highlighting local initiatives and the role of science in driving sustainable development, Dar inspired attendees to advocate for green energy solutions within their communities.

He was reinforced by an Inspiring Young Engineer Er Junaid, again an Alumni of NIT Srinagar. The issue need to be introspected by the people and government on war foot basis.


Prof. Fazil illustrated how quantum mechanics influences technological advancements, from secure communications to computational breakthroughs, demonstrating that even abstract scientific theories have tangible real-world implications. Mr Khurshid Ahmad Rather fron Department of Education gave a brief overview of fossils and his lecture was a poignant reminder of the intertwining of science, culture, and philosophy, encouraging attendees to appreciate their rich cultural heritage as a source of scientific inspiration.


The celebration was marked by active participation from faculty, scholars, and students, including representatives from Government Degree College (GDC) Tangmarg, GDC Baramulla, and various higher secondary institutions. Attendees could engage with experts, ask questions, and explore avenues for collaboration on scientific projects. A dedicated team made the event's seamless execution possible, including Dr. Nadeem, Mujtaba, Abrar, Ms Nahida, and Faizan Shah. Their commitment and meticulous planning ensured the program ran smoothly, allowing participants to focus on meaningful discussions and networking opportunities. 


The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Prof. M.A. Shah, who expressed his gratitude to all attendees, organizers, and speakers for making the day a resounding success. He reiterated the importance of fostering a scientific mindset within academic institutions and society. The World Science Day celebration at Gulmarg exemplified the power of science to unite people, inspire change, and tackle pressing global challenges. 

Prof. M.A. Shah highlighted the support of distinguished guests and special gratitude to Dr. Haseeb for providing infrastructural facilities and to Madam Dilafroze Qazi, Chairperson of SSM College of Engineering for providing Transportation, which made us possible to create a meaningful platform for dialogue and knowledge-sharing. The event served as a reminder that science, rooted in curiosity and driven by innovation, is key to unlocking a brighter, more sustainable future for all. 


In conclusion, this celebration was not merely an event but a call to action—a call to engage deeply with science, to learn from the past, and to innovate for a better tomorrow. By bringing together thought leaders, educators, and students, NIT Srinagar has paved the way for future initiatives that promise to impact the region and beyond. Prof. Shah's speech underscored the transformative role of scientific research and innovation in shaping a sustainable future and assured to connect the event with UNESCO and other organizations in future.(KNS).
