Over 3.70 Lakh Unemployed Youth Registered in J&K: Govt

Jammu, Mar 10 (KNS): The Jammu and Kashmir government has revealed that it facilitated employment opportunities for 4,893 youth, both skilled and unskilled, through job fairs held across the Union Territory over the past two years. As of January 2025, more than 3.70 lakh unemployed youth have registered on the employment portal.


According to government data from 2022-2023 to February 2025, a total of 246 job fairs were organized, with participation from 2,760 companies and 1,36,200 job seekers. Out of these, 39,782 candidates were shortlisted for second-round counseling, and 4,893 secured on-spot employment.

In 2022-23, 84 job fairs were held, involving 878 companies and 45,447 job seekers. This led to 14,014 candidates being shortlisted, with 1,761 getting immediate placements and 2,978 recommended for skill training. The following year saw an increase in outreach, with 106 job fairs, 1,412 companies, and 72,175 job seekers. In the current fiscal year (2024-25), up to February 2025, 56 job fairs were conducted, with 470 companies and 18,578 job seekers participating. From this, 5,014 were shortlisted, 1,230 received on-the-spot placements, and 855 were recommended for skill training.

In response to a query by MLA Sham Lal Sharma, the minister in charge said that the government is working on a policy aimed at boosting job creation in the private sector through various schemes and initiatives to enhance employment prospects for the youth.

He further clarified that registration on the Employment Portal is voluntary and allows job seekers to access self-employment schemes and opportunities from different government departments. As of January 2025, a total of 3,70,811 unemployed youth are registered on the portal. A baseline survey also revealed that 4.73 lakh individuals in the 18-60 age group across Jammu and Kashmir are "not working but willing to work." (KNS)
