Srinagar, May 30 (KNS): Kupwara Police has lodged an FIR against 16 army personnel including 3 Lieutenant Colonels for allegedly entering into a police station on Tuesday night and assaulting on duty policemen. The incident left four policemen injured.
According to media reports Kupwara Police have invoked IPC sections relating to rioting, robbery, kidnapping and attempted murder against the soldiers.
“At around 21:40 hours a huge number of armed and uniformed personnel of 160 Territorial Army some of them being RFN Ashiq Driver, Irfan Ahmad Driver, Mohd amin, Irfan Ahmad Driver of 2IC L/Nk Ishaq RFN Ayaz, Naik Rajiv( Buddy of 2IC) L/NK Mohd Amin, RFN Ghulam Hassan, RFN Irfan Ahmad, Naik Arif Ahmad, Hawaldar Gulzar Ahmad, Fayaz Ahmad khan and others led by lieutenant colonel Ankit Sood and Lieutenant Colonel Rajiv Chauhan and Lieutenant Colonel Nikhil unauthorizedly entered the premises of PS Kupwara. Upon being questioned regarding their arrival at PS Kupwara they collectively and without any provocation in the form of an unlawful assembly severely attacked the staff and officers present at Police Station Kupwara with rifle butts, kicks, and sticks,” an FIR copy which lies at KNS reads.
“Immediately information was conveyed to senior police officers upon which they rushed and came to this PS to rescue the police personnel being attacked over there. Upon seeing the arrival of the police units and senior police officers the alleged personnel and officers of 160 Territorial Army led by Lieutenant Colonel Ankit Sood, Raju Chauhan and Nikhil brandished their weapons, snatched the mobile phones of the injured police personnel and SHO PS Kupwara Insp.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelMohmmad Ishaq and while fleeing they abducted MHC Ghulam Rasool along with them and absconded from the spot. Accordingly case FIR no 121/2024U/S 186, 332, 307,342,147, 149, 392, 397, 365 IPC, 7/25 Arms Act stands registered,” FIR copy said.
Reports said that the injured policemen — identified as Constables Saleem Mushtaq and Zahoor Ahmad and Special Police Officers Imtiyaz Ahmad Malik and Rayees Khan — were taken to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar. Doctors said they are in stable condition.
The FIR registered at Kupwara police station, invokes the following IPC sections — 186 (voluntary obstruction of public servant in discharge of public duty), 332 (voluntarily causing harm in order to deter public servant from doing duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement of a person), 147 (rioting), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence in prosecution of common object), 392 (robbery), 397 (use of deadly weapon during a robbery or dacoity) and 365 (kidnapping and abduction with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person).
Earlier in a statement, a Defence spokesperson said: “Reports of an altercation between police and Army personnel and beating up therein of police personnel are misfounded and incorrect. Minor differences between the police personnel and a Territorial Army unit on an operational matter have been amicably resolved.” (KNS)
