Srinagar, Dec 3 (KNS): The Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association marked World Disability Day as a "black day" by holding a peaceful demonstration at the Press Enclave in Srinagar.
The protesters, carrying banners and chanting slogans, demanded action from the government to address the needs of the disabled community.
Speaking to press , the demonstrators outlined several key demands. These included the initiation of a special recruitment drive for qualified disabled individuals, a revision of the reservation system in government jobs from horizontal to vertical, and an increase in the monthly pension for persons with disabilities from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.
Additionally, they called for the provision of low-interest subsidised loans and the implementation of 4% reservation for persons with disabilities in MGNREGA, as well as in assemblies, municipalities, and educational institutions.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
One protester highlighted the need for vertical reservation in all government and semi-government jobs, instead of the current horizontal system. Another emphasized that MGNREGA and similar work opportunities should be made accessible to disabled individuals.
The protesters appealed for these demands to be met in accordance with the Disability Act of 2016 and existing government orders, urging the administration to take swift action to ensure a more inclusive society for all.(KNS)
