Gaza War Ceasefire Agreement Reached: Hostilities to End

 

Srinagar, Jan 16 (KNS) – After 15 months of intense conflict that devastated Gaza and heightened tensions across the Middle East, Hamas and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire deal, set to take effect on Sunday. The agreement, mediated by Qatar and other parties, includes a phased ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

At a press conference in Doha, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed the deal, highlighting its aim to halt violence, provide humanitarian aid, and reunite families. U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the agreement, emphasizing its importance for humanitarian relief and peace in the region.

Efforts to enforce a halt in hostilities before Sunday’s truce are ongoing, according to Palestinian officials.

The news has sparked celebrations in Gaza, where residents face dire shortages of essentials. However, Israel’s approval of the deal remains pending, with votes scheduled in its security cabinet and government. Opposition from hardline members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition has emerged, though the deal is expected to pass.

Both sides have portrayed the agreement as a significant achievement. Hamas hailed it as a "turning point," while Israeli leadership extended gratitude to international mediators, including the United States. (KNS)
