Govt Warns Retailers Against Overpricing, Mandates Display of Price Lists

Srinagar, March 6 (KNS): The Directorate of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Kashmir has issued a public notice directing all retail dealers to ensure that the prices of all goods available for sale are "prominently displayed at their business premises." The directive, issued under Section 2(6)(iv) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, aims to curb overpricing and protect consumer rights.


According to the notice, no trader or service provider can charge a price exceeding "the price fixed by or under any prevailing law," "the price displayed on the goods or their packaging," "the price listed on the rate list exhibited in accordance with legal requirements," or "the price agreed upon between the parties."

The notice warns that "failure to comply with this requirement shall be treated as an unfair trade practice, attracting legal consequences, including penalties.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel" To prevent violations, all retail dealers have been instructed to "display an itemized rate list of all products in a conspicuous location within their establishments." This includes products placed on shelves, racks, storage areas, and counters.

The department has also announced "regular market inspections" by enforcement teams to ensure strict compliance. Retailers found violating these rules "shall be subject to appropriate legal action under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019."

All retailers have been advised to "take immediate corrective measures" to avoid punitive action. The notice has been issued "in the public interest" to safeguard consumer rights and ensure fair pricing practices across the region.(KNS)
