Jaishankar Chairs All-Party Meeting on Bangladesh Crisis

New Delhi, Aug 06(KNS): Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting today to address the political crisis in Bangladesh following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government and the Army’s subsequent takeover amidst violent protests.

Jaishankar briefed party leaders on the situation in Bangladesh and the Indian government's measures to manage potential security, economic, and diplomatic impacts. He outlined strategies to handle fallout with the new Bangladeshi leadership supporting the ousted Hasina.

Jaishankar noted that the Indian government is allowing Hasina, currently in Delhi, time to decide her next steps. He assured that India is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Bangladeshi Army, which is expected to establish an interim government, to ensure the safety of Indian nationals and minorities in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina resigned yesterday and fled Bangladesh after protesters demanded her departure. She arrived at Hindon Air Force base in Uttar Pradesh, where National Security Advisor Ajit Doval greeted her. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has discussed the violence with Jaishankar, though a meeting with Hasina has not yet been confirmed.

Reports suggest that Hasina may seek asylum in London, although no official confirmation has been received from the UK. India’s Border Security Force is on high alert along the 4,096 km border with Bangladesh, with field commanders instructed to remain vigilant.

Hasina's departure followed intense protests against her government, initially sparked by civil service job quotas but escalating into demands for her resignation amid severe clashes that have resulted in over 300 deaths.(KNS).
