Gulmarg, Sep 18 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday criticised the government for projecting normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir while keeping several tourist destinations out of bounds, saying such contradictions weaken efforts to promote tourism.

“It is strange that we go out and talk about bringing tourists here, but on the ground many destinations remain closed. Drang, Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Tosa Maidan is closed, and beyond Pahalgam, Aru and Betab Valley are also shut,” Omar said while speaking to reporters after inaugurating the Gulmarg Convention Centre.

He said either the government should stop promoting tourism or ensure people dependent on these destinations are compensated. “On one side, we promote tourism, and on the other, we close these areas. These two things cannot run together,” he added.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Omar also expressed concern over restrictions on political leaders visiting bereaved families. Referring to the demise of Professor Abdul Gani Bhat he said, “Are our security personnel in Kashmir so scared that even condolences cannot be offered? What would have happened if Mehbooba Mufti or Sajjad Lone had gone there? They would have recited Fatiha, conveyed condolences to the family, and returned. This is not the right step for J&K.”

On developmental issues, Omar said several works pending since 2010 remain incomplete. “In 2010, the MLA here wrote to the Finance Ministry. After 2014, no progress was made. Now funds have been allocated, and God willing, we will complete these structures during this government,” he added.(KNS)
