SOPORE, Jan 19 (KNS): The Tehsil Administration in Sopore has announced a stringent crackdown on illegal mineral mining, specifically targeting the organized sand mafia operating in the town. All such unauthorized work has been banned with immediate effect and will remain prohibited until January 26, with strict legal action promised against violators.
Speaking with News Agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) Tehsildar Sopore Shiekh Tariq said the drive primarily aims to halt unauthorized sand extraction from river banks. He said such illicit mining is causing severe damage to the River Jhelum and the broader environment.
“Unauthorized and illegal sand mining operations must not be shielded under the pretext of unemployment,” Tehsildar Tariq asserted. “These operations are largely controlled by a well-organized mafia that exploits laborers from distant locations for personal gain, thereby further destabilizing the already fragile ecological balance.”
He issued a stern warning against any sympathy for these groups, stating, “Anyone showing empathy towards these operators is committing a significant disservice to society, as the River Jhelum and its tributaries are the real lifeline of Kashmir.

The Tehsildar detailed the multifaceted harm caused by these activities, stating that they not only pose grave environmental hazards but also degrade local infrastructure. “The illicit movement of trucks and tractors associated with this mining leads to deteriorating road conditions and contributes to respiratory problems among residents,” he said.
Stressing a balanced approach, Tehsildar Shiekh Tariq said the administration is also mindful of the livelihoods of those dependent on sand mining. He announced a proactive rehabilitation plan. “We will help transition affected workers towards alternative livelihoods, such as the manufacturing and sale of hollow concrete blocks. This initiative will protect the Jhelum while preserving employment,” he said.
He further added that the administration would support the marketing of these products, aiming to establish “Sopore’s own best brand of hollow blocks.” (KNS)
