SRINAGAR, APRIL 24 (KNS): The PG Department of Geography, Amarsingh College Srinagar organised a week long Earth day celebrations from 18 April to 23 April, 2022 in which students of Department of Geography and various other departments participated.
The programme was aimed at celebrating the Earth day to make students aware of the planet Earth and the disastrous effects of climate changes on it. All the events organised were student centric and the main objective was to explore talent among the students.
Celebrations started from 18 April, 2022 followed by Essay competition, Quiz programme, poster competition. Further a Seminar on the theme "Climate Change- A Harsh Reality" was also organized.
Finally the programme concluded with the Valedictory function held on 23 April.
Valedictory session was attended by the Principal Amarsingh College, Prof. Bashir Ahmed Rather, Dean Social Sciences and Head department of Geography Dr. Mujahid Ahmed and students of different departments of the College.

Dr. Mujahid in his speech stressed that Earth day is marked annually to highlight the concerns surrounding the environment. He also laid stress on the theme of this year Earth day , " Invest in our planet " , which focuses on acting in a bold way, innovating in a broad way and implementing in an equitable manner.
Principal Amarsingh College, Prof Bashir Ahmed Rather in his key note address congratulated the department of Geography for organizing the event. He stressed on the fact that Climate change is the biggest threat that we are facing today and it will become disastrous if we will not tackle it.
Further in his speech he said that increase in Green house gases due to anthropogenic activities has led to a situation that resulted in the warmest year in the history. Another concerning problem which he mentioned is the increase in the sea level due to melting of glaciers and ice caps which has landed humans in critical situations.
He concluded his speech with the announcement of banning of the polythene bags in the campus and directed that all the students and faculty members should plant trees in the campus. "Each one, plant one " should be the slogan and that is the only way to invest in our planet.
The programme concluded with the prize distribution ceremony in which certificates were distributed among the meritorious students .(KNS)
