Srinagar, August 08(KNS): Several artisans from different districts of the valley on Tuesday alleged favouritism and faulty scrutiny system in awards being given away by the department of handicrafts and handloom.
Artisans while talking to Kashmir News Service (KNS), said certain trainees have been receiving awards for their hand-made designs, raising doubts about the transparency and fairness of the selection process.
They expressed concern over the authenticity of the best hand-made designs that are brought into before the jury for awards. “There are suspicions that some of these designs may not be genuinely handcrafted by the trainees, and instead, they could be sourced from the market, giving an unfair advantage to those who might not be as skilled or talented,” said an artisan demanding to make the process more transparent so that people know that the products showcased by the artisans are genuine.
The awarding process has sparked questions regarding the efficiency of other departments within the Handicrafts sector, particularly those that lack knowledge of handicrafts work.
“It is essential for the recognition and appreciation of genuine talent that the awards are given based on merit, skill, and creativity, rather than on personal preferences or ulterior motives besides getting awards by cheating the jury,” they said.
Artisans further raised alarm over awards being given to trainee artists. “ Once some trainees complete their training, they are re-registered under different centers, possibly with false identities, to receive additional benefits or advantages.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThis practice not only undermines the integrity of the Handicrafts department but also deprives deserving trainees of opportunities they rightfully deserve”.
They said the widespread fraudulent activities in the department not only tarnish the reputation of the Handicrafts industry but also threaten the livelihoods of honest artisans who strive to excel in their craft.
“There is an urgent need for a thorough investigation and robust reforms to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability within the Handicrafts department especially in districts”.
Artisans appealed government Authorities must take immediate action to address these issues, implement stricter measures to prevent fraud, and establish an unbiased selection process for the UT awards.
“Also, efforts should be made to improve the collaboration and understanding between different departments within the Handicrafts sector to promote the genuine talent and creativity that exists among the skilled artisans”.
They said the Handicrafts industry is a significant cultural heritage and a source of livelihood for countless artisans.
“It is imperative to protect and promote the integrity of this traditional craft by eliminating fraudulent practices and creating a nurturing environment that fosters genuine talent and creativity”.(KNS).
