Srinagar, Oct 17 (KNS): The week-long workshop on 'Computational Techniques in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering' began at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Monday.
The workshop is being organized by Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME) NIT Srinagar and is sponsored by JSW Steel Coated Products Ltd, Lassipora Pulwama in association with Thermo-Calc Software, Micress and MicroSim.
The inaugural session was attended by Director NIT, Prof. (Dr) Rakesh Sehgal who presided over the event, while Prof M.F. Wani, Dean R&C and Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari were special guests on the occasion.
In his key speech, Prof. Sehgal said that computational tools are the implemented techniques in computers to solve problems by step-wise, repeated, and iterative solution methods.
"Focusing on relevant technologies is the need of the hour and this workshop is aimed to highlight all aspects of computational techniques in Metallurgical and materials engineering," he said.
Prof. Sehgal said all sessions of this workshop will be eye-opener for the participants and will definitely help them in sharing their experience and knowledge with others.
On the occasion, Dean R&C NIT Srinagar, Prof. M. F. Wani said the objective of this workshop is to introduce participants to new trends and technologies in the field of computational Materials Engineering.
"The resource persons for the workshop are highly experienced faculty members from reputed institutes across the country. All sessions will be highly beneficial for the participants,” he said.
Institute’s Registrar Prof. Syed Kaiser Bukhari also appreciated the MME Department for organizing the workshop on the relevant topic.

Prof. Bukhari said this subject involves computational tools for solving materials related problems. The objective of this workshop is to address a wide spectrum of computational methods used for solving complex designs and manufacturing processes, he said.
"We have designed high-tech labs at NIT Srinagar not only to be utilized for academicians but practitioners from diverse fields of society can utilize them in the best possible way," he said.
Chairman workshop and HOD, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, NIT Srinagar, Dr. Yashwant Mehta said apart from theoretical knowledge, practical sessions will be held during the five day workshop.
"We will provide hands-on experience to the participants' state of the art computational software, techniques like Micress, Thermo Calc that are used in the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering," he said.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Irfan Samad Wani and Asst. Prof. Dr. Prakash G. Ranaware from MME Department are the conveners, while as Dr. Srinibash Mishra, Dr.Anshul Gupta and Er. Aravi Muzaffar are the coordinators of the program.
Convener of the workshop, Dr. Irfan Samad Wani said the workshop is intended to cover fundamentals of computational techniques applicable in metallurgical thermodynamics and mechanical behavior of materials.
"We also have some sessions on fundamentals of computational techniques in microstructure and phase field modeling, Hands-on training sessions of ThermoCalc , MicroSim and Micress softwares etc," he said.
Prof. Pinaki Prasad Bhattacharjee (IIT Hyderabad) will deliver a special invited talk from Kyoto University Japan. The other speakers are Dr. Shantanu Madge (IIT Jammu), Dr. Saswata Bhattacharya (IIT Hyderabad), Dr.Amitava Banerjee (IIT Jodhpur), Dr. K. Guruvidyathri (UOH), Dr. Rahul MR (IIT Dhanbad), Dr. Dasari Mohan (IIT Bombay). (KNS)
